This question is one that we often come across almost daily. There is a lot of misinformation circulating to suggest that a fire alarm system only needs to be serviced once a year. It couldn’t be further from the truth.

A fire alarm system is a critical life/property safety system, and it needs to be in top working order at all times.

The standard set and used as a benchmark for all fire alarm companies is BS 5839. BSI produces it and reviews it constantly.

Being a BAFE certified company under the SP203-1 Scheme, we follow the guidance from the Scheme and BS 5839-1:2017.

According to the guidance in BS 5839-1, a service company should perform various tests, checks and functionality of the system. The way to achieve this is “carried out over the course of two or more service visits during each 12 month period.”

Therefore, depending on the size and scope of the business, you should, at the very minimum, have your fire alarm system serviced twice a year.

So What Happens During a Fire Alarm Service?

  1. A Service Technician from SCT will ring you before your service is required.
  2. Book a date and a time that suits you.
  3. Our Service Technician shows up at the agreed time and date and carries out their fire alarm system checks.
  4. The Technician gets a signature from an authorised person within the business.
  5. Signs off their worksheet.
  6. They issue a certificate.
  7. Then let you get on with your day with minimal business interruption and fuss.
